Fast funding for female reproductive science

Repro Grants is a fast grants program inspired by our friends at Impetus and Fast Grants. We award $25K-$100K to ambitious research projects aiming to deepen our understanding of the female reproductive biology. We’re seeking to learn how our bodies work so we can develop better diagnostics and interventions to improve women's health outcomes and longevity.

Are you a scientist at an academic institution with a research idea that has the potential to deepen our knowledge of the female reproductive system? Apply for a Repro Grant! The application form takes ~30 minutes to complete. You’ll get a decision within 21 days of applying. If you get approved, you’ll receive the wire as quickly as your institution can receive it.

Why do this?

Modern medicine is based on research conducted almost exclusively on male bodies. Only in 1993
did the NIH mandate that clinical trials should be run on both men and women. The implications:

  • We overmedicate women. Over 96% of common drugs, e.g. aspirin, are prescribed to women in excessive doses and lead to side effects.

  • We misdiagnose women. On average, women are diagnosed significantly later than men across 700 diseases. Women are 50% more likely to be misdiagnosed when having a heart attack.

  • We ignore female anatomy. Just as an example – it was only in 1998 that we discovered that the clitoris is not just a tiny bulb at the top of the vulva but about a 10-cm long internal structure.

Instead of catching up, we’re falling behind.

Women’s health attracts only a minuscule percentage of all science funding. In 2019, just about 11% of all NIH funding went to conditions that solely, differentially, or disproportionately affected women. In 2019 alone there were 5.8x as many publications on erectile dysfunction as on female infertility.

Our legacy systems don’t fund the early-stage science, so we have to. That’s why we launched Repro Grants. Our inaugural cohort received 465 research proposals from leading institutions across the globe. We funded 12 high-risk, high-reward projects with the potential to solve problems that impact millions of women around the world: endometriosis, ovarian aging, infertility, and limited contraceptive options.

Who is behind Repro Grants?

Repro Grants is a 50Y initiative. We recognize the urgency to expedite research in this chronically underfunded but increasingly politicized field of human biology. Fifty Years is an early-stage VC firm based in San Francisco. We support entrepreneurs solving the world's biggest problems with technology.

Repro Grants is established as a separate non-profit entity under the fiscal sponsorship of the Open Collective Foundation.

FAQ

  • The first round of applications opened on Nov 17th and closed on Dec 17th 2022. For more information follow @reprogrants on Twitter.

  • You must be a scientist (PI, PhD student, postdoc, research assistant, MD):

    • Part of an academic or non-profit research organization.

    • Interested in studying female reproductive biology/health.

Researchers from other fields are encouraged to propose projects where their expertise could address an important question in female reproductive biology. Researchers outside the US are eligible for funding.

  • We are looking to fund projects with the potential to accelerate our understanding of the female reproductive system and biology. We are placing an emphasis on funding high-risk, high-reward proposals that might not otherwise get funded.

Note: We do not fund social science approaches to reproductive health. Although important, it does not fit our focus!

  • In addition to basic information and contact details, you’re asked to answer the following questions.

    1. Project Title.

    2. Main hypothesis. Define your main research hypothesis and 1-3 sources to validate the assumption. Note! We value novel, exploratory research – if you do not have any literature traction, that's perfectly fine. Convince us why this high-risk hypothesis could have a high reward.

    3. Description of potential impact. A concise overview of your project and its potential impact. If your work succeeds, how will it improve our understanding of female reproductive health? Feel free to add potential future directions of the research.

    4. Technical project plan. Describe your technical project plan including information about the techniques, tools, replicates, and appropriate controls you're planning to use. Explain how you will measure and analyze your results. Also, include 1-2 potential pitfalls and how you will address them.

    5. Dollar amount requested and a brief itemization of the budget.

    6. Target timeline to completion.

    7. Other funding and resources that are available at your institution to help you conduct the work.

    8. Preliminary progress/validation on the project (optional). It can be validation performed by you / your research group or by someone else in the field. We welcome novel research that does not yet have literature traction!

    9. Max 2 Figures (optional).

  • Each application is reviewed by two scientists with relevant experience in the field of reproductive science. First review will be done by a PhD trainee/postdoc with no identifiable information shared. The second review will be done by a subject matter expert with identifiable information to assess “ability to execute”.

All reviewers will sign NDA to ensure confidentiality of your research idea.

  • Applications are reviewed on the quality of project design, the potential impact on the field, translational potential, the technical project plan, and the ability of the applicant to execute the proposed research.

  • We require a Repro Grant to be used solely to expedite the proposed research question at hand. In the application form, we ask to give an itemized overview of the budget to ensure that the funding will be used in a cost-effective manner.

  • You and your organization! Apart from the open science publication requirement, Repro Grants makes no claims on the intellectual property of your work. In addition, all reviewers and staff have signed an NDA to guarantee the confidentiality of your proposed research.

  • Yes, all our staff and scientific reviewers have signed an NDA to ensure the confidentiality of your proposal.

  • There are no requirements for a project period. The application form asks for a timeline to help us set expectations for the project and follow up on the research.

  • We provide anywhere from $25K to $100K. We do consider the amount requested during the review in terms of cost-effectiveness to answer the proposed research question. We will consider providing smaller grants ($10K-25K) on a case-by-case basis.

    • You must use the grant to work on the topic you outlined in the application.

    • For larger grants ($50-100K), we encourage you to send us quarterly updates, summarizing your progress (up to 1 year). These can be as simple as a single-paragraph email.

    • You must upload all manuscripts reporting work supported by the grant to a preprint server such as bioRxiv or arXiv upon submission to a peer-reviewed journal. We don’t want to delay the impact of the work by long publication cycles!

    • In line with Gates Foundation policy, we will pay at most 10% in overhead costs to the university. This will be in addition to the budget requested for the specific research. So for instance, if you requested $100K for the research proposal, we can provide a maximum of $10K in addition to overhead costs.

  • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. After you apply, you will receive a decision within 21 days.

  • Repro Grants has been established as a non-profit entity under the fiscal sponsorship of the Open Collective Foundation (OCF). The funding will come through the OCF platform.
